School bus

A home address changed—has the school transportation record changed too?

Tell the school promptly, verify the approved pickup plan, and do not assume a bus can use a new address immediately.

A move, temporary stay, or change between households can affect where a student is expected to board and leave the school bus. Telling a driver informally may not update the official transportation record or route. Families and schools should use the approved process, allow time for review, and confirm the new plan before sending a child to a different stop.

Start with the school transportation contact

Provide the school with the new address, effective date, current contact numbers, and whether the change is permanent or temporary. Ask which documents or approvals are required and who submits the transportation update.

NYC Public Schools tells families to notify the school's transportation coordinator and confirm address or contact changes in their NYC Schools Account. Other districts and schools may use different systems, so follow the process that governs the student's service.

Do not treat the new stop as active until confirmed

An address change may affect eligibility, route design, stop location, ride time, or the assigned vehicle. The driver should not be asked to add an unapproved stop during the route.

Obtain the confirmed pickup point, expected schedule, start date, route or vehicle information if provided, and instructions for an adult receiving the student. Keep using the currently approved arrangement until the school says the change is active.

Clarify split-household and temporary arrangements

If a student stays at more than one household, describe the actual weekly pattern instead of saying the address changes sometimes. Ask the school whether the transportation program can support that pattern and how exceptions or calendar changes must be reported.

For temporary housing or an urgent family move, tell the school the circumstances without assuming the normal routing timeline or eligibility rules. The school can identify the correct district process and any available interim option.

  • New address and effective date.
  • Permanent, temporary, or recurring pattern.
  • Updated family contacts.
  • Confirmed first day of the revised route.

Review the first week carefully

On the first days, have the student ready at the approved location and keep the receiving adult reachable. Check the official family portal or school communication channel for changes rather than relying on a remembered schedule.

If the bus does not follow the confirmed plan, record the date, scheduled details, and what occurred, then contact the school or designated transportation office. A factual report is easier to investigate than several conflicting messages.
