Paratransit

A recurring paratransit trip changed. Pause or revise the subscription correctly

Separate one-day cancellations, temporary pauses, and permanent schedule changes so unwanted trips are not left active.

Subscription paratransit can automatically schedule a repeating trip, but a vacation, treatment break, new appointment time, or destination change can make that pattern inaccurate. Riders should identify whether they need to cancel one trip, pause several trips, or request a revised subscription. Those actions may use different processes and should be confirmed before the affected travel date.

Identify the kind of change

Write down the subscription's days, pickup and return times, origin, destination, mobility equipment, and effective dates. Then mark exactly what is changing: one occurrence, a date range, or the ongoing pattern.

Do not assume canceling one scheduled trip changes the future subscription. Likewise, a permanent change in time, destination, or equipment may require a new subscription request rather than a temporary hold.

Use the correct program channel

For New York City Access-A-Ride, the MTA says subscription changes involving equipment, days, times, appointment times, return pickups, origins, or destinations require another subscription request. The MTA also provides a process for placing subscription trips on hold.

The current policy says trips within the next two calendar days are managed through MY AAR or the Reservation Unit, not the Subscription Service Unit. Riders should check the live policy because procedures and contact options can change.

Record both the stop and restart

For a temporary pause, state the first date vehicles should not arrive and the first date service should resume. If the return date is unknown, ask how an indefinite hold works and what deadline applies.

Keep the confirmation, submission date, channel, and name or case number associated with the request. Check the rider account or call again if the expected change is not visible.

  • First paused date.
  • First resumed date or indefinite status.
  • Confirmation or case number.

Review every linked trip

A recurring outbound trip and its return may be stored as separate rides. Confirm whether both directions changed, and review any other reservations on the same day.

Before service resumes, verify the pickup address, destination, times, mobility equipment, companion information, and contact number. A short review prevents an old detail from returning with the subscription.
