Staying after school? Confirm which transportation plan applies
After-school activities, tutoring, sports, and early dismissals need an approved pickup, authorized rider list, contact, and backup plan.

A student’s regular afternoon bus plan may not apply after tutoring, practice, a club, detention, or another scheduled activity. Families and schools should confirm the approved arrangement before the school day begins so the student is not left deciding between conflicting instructions.
Identify the exact day and activity
Write down the activity date, expected release time, building exit, staff supervisor, and whether the activity is one-time or recurring. Check the school calendar for early dismissal, closure, or schedule changes that affect the plan.
Do not assume every after-school program includes transportation. The school or district should confirm whether a late bus, regular route, parent pickup, or another approved arrangement applies.
Use the school’s authorization process
Submit permission, transportation requests, and caregiver information through the school’s designated system. If eligibility or space rules apply, wait for approval before telling the student they will ride.
A note to a classroom teacher may not reach the transportation office, and a conversation with a driver does not create an authorized route or stop. Ask for the effective date and official instructions.
Confirm where and with whom the student waits
Identify the supervised waiting area, release procedure, bus loading location, and staff contact. If the late bus uses a different entrance or grouping process, explain it to the student in advance.
For a student with an approved support or transportation plan, make sure the responsible team reviews how the after-school arrangement fits the student’s needs. Share sensitive information only through authorized channels.
Give caregivers the same arrival information
Confirm the route or vehicle identifier, expected drop-off process, approved stop, receiving adult requirements, and contact for delays. A late bus may not follow the same route or timing as the regular afternoon service.
If a caregiver will pick up instead, close the loop with the school and transportation team so the student is not also expected on a bus. Avoid sending different instructions through multiple relatives.
Create a backup before the activity begins
Decide what the student should do if the activity ends early, runs late, is canceled, or the approved ride changes. The backup should direct the student to a supervised school contact, not to improvise a trip home.
Review recurring arrangements whenever the activity schedule, address, caregiver, or student needs change. Contact Cathay to discuss school transportation communication for approved after-school service.
