School bus
Someone different is meeting the school bus. Update the authorized-receiver plan first
Use the school's approved process before a substitute adult meets a student at drop-off, and make identification and backup steps clear.

A grandparent, babysitter, sibling, or family friend may need to meet a child when the usual adult is unavailable. That change should be handled through the school's approved transportation process—not through a last-minute message passed only to the driver. A current authorized-receiver record protects the student and gives the bus team clear instructions.
Start with the school's official record
Ask the school which form or communication channel is required to add or change an authorized receiving adult. Provide the person's full name, relationship, current contact number, applicable dates, and any identification instructions.
NYC Public Schools says families using curb-to-school transportation complete an emergency contact form identifying adults authorized to receive the student. Drivers may ask for identification before releasing a child. Other schools and districts may use different procedures.

A text to a driver, handwritten note, or request from someone standing at the stop may not change the approved release record. The school or designated transportation office should confirm when the update is active.
Tell the substitute adult the approved stop, expected time, vehicle information if provided, and identification they should bring. They should arrive early enough to be visible at the correct location.
Make the backup process clear
Families should know what happens if no authorized adult is present. NYC Public Schools describes a process in which the driver radios the base, continues the route, and follows dispatch and Office of Pupil Transportation direction rather than leaving the student with an unverified person.
Keep the parent or guardian reachable during the drop-off period. Do not ask the child to decide whether an unfamiliar or unlisted adult is permitted to receive them.
- Authorized adult's full name and phone.
- Dates or recurring days covered.
- Required identification.
- Parent and school backup contacts.
Remove old permissions when plans change
A temporary authorization should have a clear end date when the school's process allows it. Review the emergency contact and release list after household, caregiver, or phone-number changes.
If the bus team follows the approved record but the family's expectation differs, contact the school transportation coordinator to correct the record. Avoid placing the driver or attendant between conflicting verbal instructions.
