Paratransit
Taking paratransit somewhere new: check more than the address
Questions to settle before reserving a trip to an unfamiliar building, appointment location, or community destination.

A familiar trip often comes with knowledge you no longer have to think about: where the entrance is, who can answer a call, and where to wait for the ride home. A new destination needs those details worked out. Start with the rules of the paratransit program providing the trip, then confirm what will happen at the building.
Check the program before planning the day
Ask the relevant paratransit program whether the destination and travel times fall within its service arrangements. Confirm the reservation process, required notice, pickup expectations, and any rules for companions or personal care attendants that apply to your trip.
Do not assume that another rider’s experience in a different program establishes the rules for yours. Eligibility, service areas, and booking procedures should come from the responsible program’s current information. A request is not a confirmed reservation until the program confirms it.
Call the destination about the entrance
Ask the destination which entrance visitors should use and whether it is reachable from the intended vehicle meeting point. Include the building name, street address, and any useful entrance description in the information you provide during booking.
Large campuses, shopping centers, and buildings on corner lots can have several doors. Find out which one is used for your appointment and whether the same entrance remains open when you expect to leave. Ask whom to call if you need help identifying the meeting point.
Keep appointment and travel information distinct
Tell the reservation team the time you need to arrive, including any check-in requirement. Record the travel arrangement the program confirms, rather than treating the appointment time as the pickup time.
For the return, ask the destination how long the activity normally takes while recognizing that it may run late. Confirm how the program handles changes and what you should do if you are not ready for the booked return. Do not assume a vehicle can wait indefinitely.
Decide where communication will happen
Carry the reservation details and the program’s trip assistance contact in an accessible format. If another person coordinates calls, agree on how they will reach you and which changes they are authorized to make.
If the agreed meeting point becomes unavailable, contact the program before moving to a different location. An updated plan needs to reach the people operating the trip. A new location described only to a receptionist or relative may not reach the driver.
Save what you learn for the next visit
After the first trip, note the confirmed entrance, helpful building contact, and any access question to raise before returning. Keep changing details, such as construction or opening hours, separate from information that is likely to remain useful.
An unfamiliar destination becomes easier to manage when you have a repeatable checklist. Cathay can discuss transportation needs and the relevant program arrangements; confirm eligibility and reservation requirements with the program responsible for your service.
