A student has crutches or a cast. Update the school transportation plan

Use the school's approved process to review temporary mobility limits, the stop path, boarding needs, supervision, and the return routine.

A temporary cast, crutches, walking boot, or short-term mobility restriction can change how a student reaches the stop, boards, sits, and moves through school. It does not automatically change transportation eligibility or the assigned route. The family should contact the school promptly and use the official review process before expecting a different vehicle, stop, or level of support.

Tell the school what changed

Share the start date, expected duration, mobility device, weight-bearing restrictions provided by the clinician, and any other information the school's designated team requests. Explain how the condition affects the trip rather than sending only a diagnosis.

New York City Public Schools directs families seeking transportation because of a temporary medical condition or short-term limited mobility to submit its Short-term/Temporary Busing Request Form to the Office of Pupil Transportation for review.

Review the path, not just the bus

Check stairs, curbs, snow or rain exposure, long walking distances, crowded entrances, and the route between the vehicle and classroom. Identify the safest approved meeting point without creating an unofficial stop.

Ask who is responsible for the student before boarding and after drop-off. The driver or attendant should not receive new care or supervision instructions informally at the curb.

Confirm the approved transportation details

Wait for the school or transportation office to confirm any temporary exception, vehicle change, seating arrangement, stop change, or additional support. A clinician's note may support a request, but it does not itself rewrite the route.

Make sure the student can use the mobility device as intended and can follow the approved boarding process. Do not practice boarding around a moving or idling bus.

  • Temporary condition and expected duration.
  • Mobility device and relevant restrictions.
  • Approved stop, vehicle, and assistance.
  • School and family contacts.

Check the first day and the recovery date

Before the first trip under the temporary plan, confirm the effective date with the school and make sure the student and authorized adult know the routine. Report problems through the school's designated channel.

When the cast is removed or the student's mobility changes, update the school again. Temporary support should not remain on an outdated assumption, and the original transportation plan should not resume until the responsible office confirms it.
